How many times have you been asked this simple, but puzzling, question when you get your oil changed: "Put synthetic oil in?" Synthetic oil manufacturers say that your engine will perform better and you won't need to change oil as frequently if you switch, but given that synthetic oil costs almost twice as much as conventional oil, it's not a decision you should make in haste.
You're not likely to find the answer in your owner's manual, since typically the only cars that require synthetic oil are high-performance cars or vehicles that are outfitted with a supercharged or turbocharged engine.
Synthetic oil does usually last longer than conventional oil, meaning you can expect to drive at least 7,500 miles before needing another oil change. Since you're reducing the number of oil changes by approximately half, you're also negating the added cost associated with using synthetic oil.
Another key factor in favor of synthetic oil is that older or high mileage engines might run better if you switch to synthetic oil, since there's less engine sludge created.
